Year 1
Welcome to Year 1. Children here are taught by Mrs Kenyon-Bell and Mrs S Sear in 1SK and Miss E Brown in 1EB assisted by Mrs Asenso, Ms McGill and Ms Alhamad.
In year 1 we enjoy lots of practical learning and like to make use of our outdoor classroom and school grounds whenever possible.
In maths we are working on securing our understanding of number and place value and will then move on to number bonds and counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We use lots of concrete apparatus to secure our understanding.
In English we are securing all of our sounds in phonics to help us read and we are working on our understanding of texts through discussion and drama. We then do lots of talking about what we have read which helps us with our writing. We are trying hard to develop our handwriting and to use finger spaces, capital letters, full stops and use our sounds to help us spell.
Children in Year 1 are tested on their phonics knowledge with the Phonics Screening Test in June. Children will be assessed on the sounds they know by their class teacher. This is nothing to worry about and any children who do not pass will have the chance to do it again in Year 2. You will be told your child’s score in their end of year report.
