Year 6

Welcome to Year 6. Children here are taught by Ms Winspear in 6LW and Miss Hunt in 6GH assisted by Mrs Burke and Mrs Isbell.

In year 6 we revisit any areas we are not as confident in and are developing key skills which will prepare us for transition to secondary such as being responsible for our own learning, ensuring we come to lessons fully prepared and complete homework to deadlines.

In maths we are applying our knowledge of the four operations to problem solve and reason. We also do lots of work on fractions, decimals and percentages.

In English we use all of our learning to write at length and spend time editing and revising which are essential skills in themselves. We like to find real purposes for our writing such as producing tourist leaflets about Greece and writing balanced arguments on important issues.

Children will sit their SATS in May and will be tested on their reading, maths and grammar. These are national tests which are externally marked. Your child’s results will be reported to you in their end of year report. You can find more information about SATs in the side panel.

Home Learning

  • Hear your child read as often as you can. Ask them about the book to check their understanding of the story and new words.
  • Practise your times tables and number bonds.
  • Complete your weekly homework task and encourage children to present this neatly – this will help with handwriting too.
  • Make use of TTRockstars as much as possible – this is a fun and interactive way for children to practise essential skills.
